DIY Detox Salt Scrub

I bought some salt scrub from Amazon and loved it, but didn't want to spend $12 every time I wanted a new jar of the stuff, so I decided to make my own (way more affordable) version.

This recipe uses all natural Himalayan sea salt, essential oils and conditioning oils, and is awesome for disinfecting and exfoliation.

Why use a Salt Scrub?

Don't get me wrong, I love a good spa treatment as much as the next girl, but what really are the benefits of using a salt scrub? Why salt? Why not sugar, or coffee, or mud, or clay? What's the difference and the benefits between all of them? Aggghhhhh!!!

They're all good, but salt scrubs fill a specific need.

Well, 3 needs, actually.

1. Salt disinfects and cleans. That's why it's used in tons of DIY Cleaning recipes.

2. Salt conditions and softens. I don't know the science behind it, but it works! It'll make your skin softer, and some people use salt water as fabric softener.

3. Salt Exfoliates. Before it dissolves, you can get a nice scrub in.

If you mix the right ingredients, your salt scrub can pull toxins to the surface of your skin, grab hold of them, and pull them right off!

Hence, my salt scrub.

What's so special about Pink Salt?
Himalayan sea salt comes from salt mines thousands of feet below a mountain range in the Himalayas. A lot of people say it is better for you and has more minerals and a better balance of stuff in it. Other people say it makes no difference.

Personally I use it for 2 reasons.
1. It's cheap (when purchased in the right place)
2. It's pretty.

^yeah I know those reasons aren't phenomenal, but that's why!

Why these ingredients?
  • Salt - see article above
  • Healing clay - pulls dirt and toxins to the surface of the skin
  • baking soda - softens skin
  • Activated charcoal - adsorber (read all about it here)
  • Rosehip, Coconut, and jojoba oil - softens and conditions, and does lots of other great stuff!
  • Essential oils all have their own unique benefits, but almost all of them kill bacteria and balance hormone levels.

Detox Salt Scrub

Ingredients
  • 2 cups Himalayan pink salt (I got mine from Homegoods or Marshalls. So cheap! You can also do 1 cup pink salt, 1 cup Epsom salt).
  • 1/4 cup Indian Healing clay
  • 2 tbs baking soda
  • 1 tsp Activated charcoal (or 2-3 capsules)
  • 1/3 cup rosehip oil
  • 1/2 cup coconut or sweet almond oil
  • 1/3 cup jojoba oil
  • 10 drops of essential oils (your choice for the combination, but I like Lavender and Peppermint, or Grapefruit and Lemon)

1. In a small bowl, mix all the oils (carrier and essential) together until fully combined.

2. In another (larger) bowl, mix the salt, clay, soda, and charcoal until fully combined. drizzle the oil mixture over the dry mixture, mixing and folding and cutting to fully distribute it.

3. When fully combined, store in an air-tight container. Do not fill the container all the way up, because the oils will seep out and make a huge mess. Mix gently before using.

To use: Scoop into your hands and scrub all over, leave it on for about 5-10 minutes, and wash off.
To store: keep in an air-tight container.

***note - this makes a mess. Be prepared to scrub the tup when you're done!***
